Total Talent Management consists of all work processes and systems related to attracting, developing and retaining good people who can be turned into fully engaged top talent.  The primary purpose is to assure that the Right People with the Right Skills are in the Right Position at the Right Time.

Here are the 10 elements of a Total Talent Management System recommended by the Talent Management Institute:

  1. Planning for Talent
This is a basic requirement that supports an objective of the strategic plan.
  2. Attracting and Recruiting Talent
Ideally, this element includes job benchmarking to clarify the requirements of the job.
  3. Selecting Talent
This element considers the job benchmark and includes a job-talent fit process.
  4. Employing Talent
This frequently involves the traditional HR function of getting the applicant hired.
  5. Onboarding Talent
This element is the beginning of alignment and development of talent.
  6. Developing Talent
Ideally, this will be based on the gaps between the requirements of the job and what the individual brings to the job.
  7. Managing Talent Performance
This should be an ongoing, real-time process conducted by the manager/team leader and not just during the typical annual performance appraisal.
  8. Rewarding and Compensating Talent
A core HRM function that considers the labor market and is a requirement to prevent employee dissatisfaction.
  9. Retaining Talent
Turnover is frequently associated with level of employee engagement and is significantly influenced by the manager.
  10. Succession and Moving/Removing Talent
A preplanned career path is ideal that anticipates future leadership and senior management roles linked to the strategic plan. Removal along the path may be necessary but ultimately everyone will exit the organization at some time in the future.
