Are You Giving Feedback or Advice?

Are You Giving Feedback or Advice?

Here is the difference and why it matters:

Talent Management includes creating a relationship that accelerates progress to mastery.

An employee’s manager or team leader is usually the ideal person to provide feedback or advice.

Who better than the team leader to know the strengths and performance levels of each team member?

But wait, do I give feedback or advice?

Let’s consider the difference.

I like Marshall Goldsmith’s definitions:

Advice is about expanding the scope of knowledge;
Feedback is about filling a blind spot.

One is about providing information that I may get on my own at some point.

Whereas, feedback is information you have that I may never learn on my own, which can be irritating if not done properly.
